Two ways of dropping particles, one rule apart — and the interface scaling changes (KPZ stands for Kardar–Parisi–Zhang). Watch the log-log plot of the width \(W(t)\) distinguish the growth exponents \(\beta = \dfrac{1}{2}\) and \(\dfrac{1}{3}\).

解説About

The "roughness" of an interface with heights \(h_i\) is measured by the interface width — the standard deviation of the height,

\[ W(L,t) \;=\; \sqrt{\, \frac{1}{L} \sum_{i=1}^{L} \left( h_i - \bar{h} \right)^2 \,} \]

In random deposition (left, blue), each particle simply stacks on a randomly chosen column. The columns are completely uncorrelated: each height is an independent Poisson process — a random walk in time. Since a Poisson distribution with mean \(t\) (in monolayers) also has variance \(t\), the width obeys exactly

\[ W_{\mathrm{RD}}(t) \;=\; \sqrt{t} \]

Check that the simulated values sit right on this curve (e.g. \(W \approx 31.6\) at \(t = 1000\)). Lateral correlations never develop, and the surface roughens without bound.

In the RSOS model (right, red; Kim–Kosterlitz), a particle drops onto a random column but is accepted only if the height differences with both neighbors stay at most one. This constraint couples neighboring columns, and a lateral correlation length grows as \(\xi_\parallel \sim t^{1/z}\). Growing interfaces of this kind generally obey Family–Vicsek scaling,

\[ W(L,t) \;\simeq\; L^{\alpha} \, f\!\left( \frac{t}{L^{z}} \right), \qquad f(u) \sim \begin{cases} u^{\beta} & (u \ll 1) \\[2pt] \mathrm{const} & (u \gg 1) \end{cases}, \qquad \beta = \frac{\alpha}{z} \]

That is, the width first grows as \(W \sim t^{\beta}\), and saturates at \(W \sim L^{\alpha}\) once the correlation length reaches the system size at \(t \sim L^{z}\). For the present \(L = 1024\) this gives \(L^{z} \approx 3\times10^4\) monolayers, but that scaling estimate ignores prefactors: in practice the growth starts to bend over about a decade earlier, around \(t \sim 4\times10^3\). The flattening of the red curve below the dashed \(t^{1/3}\) guide near the right edge of the plot is precisely the onset of this saturation crossover.

この普遍クラスの連続記述が、KPZ(Kardar–Parisi–Zhang)方程式です。

The continuum description of this universality class is the KPZ (Kardar–Parisi–Zhang) equation,

\[ \frac{\partial h}{\partial t} \;=\; \nu \nabla^2 h \;+\; \frac{\lambda}{2} \left( \nabla h \right)^2 \;+\; \eta, \qquad \left\langle \eta(x,t)\,\eta(x',t') \right\rangle = 2D\,\delta(x-x')\,\delta(t-t') \]

The nonlinear term \((\nabla h)^2\) encodes the geometric fact that a tilted surface grows along its normal — this is the essential difference from random deposition and from the linear \(\lambda = 0\) theory (the Edwards–Wilkinson equation, a distinct class with \(\beta = \dfrac{1}{4}\) in 1+1 dimensions). In 1+1 dimensions, Galilean invariance together with a fluctuation-dissipation relation fixes the exponents exactly:

\[ \alpha = \frac{1}{2}, \qquad \beta = \frac{1}{3}, \qquad z = \frac{3}{2} \]

Incidentally, ballistic deposition — the model where a falling particle sticks the moment it touches a neighboring column — belongs to the same universality class and is the textbook example of KPZ growth, but its intrinsic-width corrections to scaling are notoriously large, hiding \(\beta = \dfrac{1}{3}\) in small systems. That is why this page uses the RSOS model.

KPZ remains a thriving field. In 1+1 dimensions the full distribution of height fluctuations has been computed exactly, and it follows — remarkably — the Tracy–Widom distributions of random matrix theory (with the beautiful twist that flat versus curved initial conditions select the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE) versus the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE)). This universality has even been observed in liquid-crystal turbulence experiments (Takeuchi–Sano). For the theory, Section 9.6 of M. Kardar's Statistical Physics of Fields is breathtaking; do have a look.
