What is topology? — what survives continuous deformation
A coffee cup and a doughnut are "the same shape" — almost every story about topology starts with this line. Imagine kneading a lump of soft clay into the shape of a doughnut. Without tearing it or punching a new hole — just by pushing and stretching — you can reshape it into a mug with a handle (Fig. 1), because both objects have exactly one hole. Conversely, no matter how skilfully you knead it, a doughnut can never become a ball: somewhere along the way you would have to close the hole, and that is a discontinuous operation.
A quantity like the number of holes \(g\) (called the genus) is a topological invariant. Two points matter here. First, a topological invariant takes only discrete values (integers) such as \(0,1,2,\dots\). Second, it never changes under continuous deformation. These two facts are two sides of the same coin: an integer cannot change continuously. This robustness — nothing short of tearing can alter it — is what physicists call topological protection.
1.1 What is the "shape" of matter?
What does this have to do with matter? As we will see in detail later, electronic states in a crystal are described by a Hamiltonian \(H(\boldsymbol k)\) with the wave vector \(\boldsymbol k\) as its argument, together with energy bands \(\varepsilon_n(\boldsymbol k)\) and eigenstates \(|u_n(\boldsymbol k)\rangle\). The analogue of "continuously deforming the clay" is continuously changing the parameters of the Hamiltonian without closing the band gap. We regard a gapped insulator as one "shape," and group together all insulators that can be deformed into one another while keeping the gap open — this is the basic idea of topological condensed-matter physics.
Just as the only way from a doughnut to a ball is to close the hole, any path connecting two insulators of different "shape" must close the gap somewhere — a metallic (gapless) state necessarily appears along the way. This innocent-looking statement is in fact the single most important principle running through this entire note. At the boundary between a topological insulator and the vacuum (which is itself a perfectly ordinary insulator), that is, at the surface or edge of the material, gapless states must appear. The seed of the bulk–edge correspondence, which we will meet again and again, is already here.
A hands-on toy captures this "something must appear at the boundary" intuition. Take a long paper strip and glue its ends as they are: you get an ordinary band. Give the strip a half turn (180°) twist before gluing, and you get the Möbius band — a curious surface with no distinction between front and back: trace it with a finger and after one lap you are on the "other side," returning only after two laps. The crucial point: the presence or absence of the twist can never be changed by continuous deformation without cutting the tape. The parity of the twist is a topological invariant with the same standing as the number of holes.
Now picture the vacuum (an ordinary insulator) as the untwisted band and the topological insulator as the half-twisted Möbius band (Fig. 2). Try to join the two side by side into a single sheet: somewhere along the seam the twist must be undone, and there the band simply cannot continue smoothly as a band — this "defect of the seam" is the analogue of the gapless (metallic) boundary states of a real material. The analogy is only an analogy: the true invariants are not twist numbers but the Chern and \(\mathbb Z_2\) invariants constructed in later chapters. Yet the skeleton of the logic — two regions with different invariants cannot be glued together without an anomaly at their boundary — is exactly the same for paper tape and for electrons.
1.2 Why are physical quantities quantized so precisely?
Topology took centre stage in condensed-matter physics with the discovery of the quantum Hall effect in 1980. The Hall conductivity \(\sigma_{xy}\) of a two-dimensional electron system in a strong magnetic field was found to obey
quantized in integer units \(\nu\) to one part in a billion — regardless of the sample's shape, its impurity content, or the material it is made of. "Dirty" samples in different laboratories all give exactly the same value. Compared with ordinary material constants (conductivity, specific heat, …), which are sensitive to every detail of the sample, this is astonishing.
Independent of details, discrete, and unshaken by moderate disorder — these are precisely the properties of a topological invariant. Indeed, as we will show in §4, \(\nu\) is an integer called the Chern number, determined by the geometry of the occupied bands — a close relative of the "number of holes." Whenever a physical quantity comes out as an exact integer, geometry of this kind is almost always hiding behind it. Uncovering that geometry, one step at a time, is the goal of this note.
Column: the Gauss–Bonnet theorem — curvature adds up to an integerクリックで展開click to expand
"Integrate a local quantity, and you get a global integer" — the prototype of a pattern we will meet repeatedly in this note comes from nineteenth-century differential geometry. Summing the Gaussian curvature \(K(\boldsymbol r)\) (a local measure of how curved the surface is at each point) over a closed surface \(S\) gives
This is the Gauss–Bonnet theorem. The right-hand side is an integer determined solely by the genus \(g\). The integrand \(K(\boldsymbol r)\) can take arbitrary values from place to place, yet its total never changes. For a sphere of radius \(R\), for instance, \(K=1/R^{2}\) and the area is \(4\pi R^{2}\), so the integral equals \(1\) independently of \(R\) — hence \(g=0\). Dent the sphere however you like: whatever curvature the dent removes, some bulge elsewhere restores.
The TKNN formula (the Chern number) in §4 is the quantum-mechanical version of this theorem: replace the surface by the Brillouin zone (a torus) and the Gaussian curvature by the Berry curvature \(\Omega_n(\boldsymbol k)\), and once again the integral is an integer. This is also why the word "curvature" is imported directly from geometry.
1.3 How to walk through this note
Assuming only elementary quantum mechanics (state vectors, the Schrödinger equation, spin), this note builds the main landscape of topological condensed-matter physics from scratch. The route follows the publicly available video series of graduate lectures ("Advanced Condensed Matter Physics A") delivered at Keio University by Prof. Shuichi Murakami (now at the University of Tokyo) — linked in the references of §11. Prof. Murakami also co-authored, with Prof. Eiji Saitoh, the book Spin Current and Topological Insulators (its topological chapters are Murakami's); it overlaps especially with §5–§7 of this note. The Berry phase in §2 is the foundation of everything. From there we move on to electron dynamics in §3 and the quantum Hall effect in §4, proceed through the spin Hall effect and topological insulators in §5–§7, the modern theory of polarization in §8, Weyl semimetals and Majorana fermions in §9, and finally survey the whole landscape with the tenfold way — the "periodic table of topological matter" — in §10.

A topological invariant is a discrete (integer) quantity unchanged by continuous deformation. In matter, "deformations that keep the gap open" play the role of continuous deformations, and gapless states must appear at the boundary between insulators with different invariants. Behind every physical quantity quantized to integer precision, this structure is almost always hiding.

Summary & notation
A long journey — yet in hindsight every topic we covered lies on a single thread. The geometry of the Berry phase (§2) is the base; quantized over a closed surface it becomes the Chern number (§4); constrained by time reversal it morphs into \(\mathbb Z_2\) (§6–§7); carried into parameter space it becomes pumping and polarization (§8); lodged at a gapless point it becomes a Weyl node (§9); teamed with particle–hole symmetry it protects Majoranas (§9); and sorted by symmetry and dimension it all fits on the single map of the tenfold way (§10). One sentence from §1 — "a discrete quantity unchanged by continuous deformation" — binds all of this physics together.
And once more, the field's watchword: wherever a bulk invariant changes, gapless states must appear. Chiral edges of Hall systems, helical edges of quantum spin Hall insulators, surface Dirac electrons of 3D topological insulators, Fermi arcs of Weyl semimetals, Majorana ends of the Kitaev chain — different faces, all children of the bulk–edge correspondence.

Conventions: throughout this note \(\boldsymbol{\mathcal A}_n=i\langle u_n|\nabla u_n\rangle\), \(\gamma_n=\displaystyle\oint\boldsymbol{\mathcal A}_n\cdot d\boldsymbol R\), and the electron charge is \(-e\) (\(e>0\)). Some references choose opposite signs for the connection, curvature or BZ orientation, flipping the apparent signs of Chern numbers and \(\sigma_{xy}\); the physics (quantization, integer jumps, edge counting) is convention independent. All figures are numerically computed (Berry curvatures and Chern numbers via the Fukui–Hatsugai–Suzuki lattice method; Wannier centres via Wilson loops).
